September 30, 2022 (Attleboro, Mass.) – A week after picking the first two wins of the new year at the Village the NAHL Northeast Generals took to the ice for a home date against the Maine Nordiques. Mercyhurst Commit and captain Jackson McCarthy found the back of the net for a pair of goals in the 5-4 Generals win.
With the win Northeast makes it 3 straight and improves to 4-5 on the year. Maine who won their season opener are still searching for their second win falling to 1-4.
Fellow Captain and Arizona State commit Paul Minnehan opened the scoring with his 6th goal of the season at the 8:43 mark of the first period. Entering the Nordiques zone on the left side Minnehan carried the puck below the faceoff circle and cut across the front of the crease before beating Maine Netminder Thomas Heaney on the far side.
The Nordiques tied the game at the 11:42 mark on the back of a John-Paul Steele goal. Tony Achille brought the puck into the Generals zone and carried it from the right side corner to the front of the net. Cullen DeYoung stopped the first two attempts, but a fortuitous rebound found Steele at the top of the circle to bank it off the far post and into the net.
McCarthy scored his first of the game late in the first period at 14:52 to help his team to a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room. Future Air Force player Joe Schubert got the puck from Jake LaRusso in the middle of the Nordiques zone. Schubert looked back door and found McCarthy ready to tap it home.
Only one goal was scored in the second period. Dave Andreychuck (St. Lawrence) was the beneficiary of a juicy rebound in front of the Maine Net. Providence commit Ryan Schelling got a stretch pass from Sixten Jennersjö (LIU) on the right side of the Maine blue line. Schelling walked in and shot for the low far pad allowing for a loose puck to find the stick of Andreychuck extending the lead to 3-1 at the 6:33 mark.
Maine mounted a comeback effort in the third period scoring three goals in the frame, but it wasn’t enough as the Generals found the back of the net two times in the period to earn the win. Jared Scott scored first only 1:45 in the period finishing a pass from LaRusso in tight to the goal. LaRusso’s second assist of the game was also his 100th NAHL career point. Then with exactly 10 minutes remaining in regulation McCarthy found the back of the net for his second of the game this time with a tip in front off of a shot from Minnehan.
DeYoung (3-3) made 45 saves on 49 shots in the winning effort while Heaney (1-1-1) stopped 38 of 43 in the loss.
The two teams close out the weekend series up in Maine at the Colisée on Saturday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Lewiston.
