September 14, 2022 (Blaine, Mn.) – Douglas Friberg found the back of the net for the first time this season, but he was the only one wearing blue to do so as the Generals drop the first game of the 2022 NAHL Showcase 3-1 against the Central Division’s Austin Bruins.
With the loss Northeast falls to 1-2 this season with three more games to play in the showcase. Austin meanwhile starts their season 1-0 with the win.
The Gens opened the scoring 7:49 into the game on the back of strong forechecking in the Bruins zone. Following a bunch of defensive zone turnovers by Austin Air Force commit Joe Schubert fed the puck up the far side wall to Friberg at the blue line. Friberg walked toward the middle of the line and shot to the bottom portion of the net. With no one in front the puck had a clear lane past the Bruins netminder and into the back of the net.
A pair of goals in the second period evened the score and gave the Bruins the lead. First at the 7:20 mark while on the powerplay Austin Salani slid the puck to the front of the net where Walter Zacher waited to tap it into the open net. A few moments later at 10:01 Austin took the lead by capitalizing on an offensive zone faceoff. Jackson Rilei set up on the inside hashmark on the draw and found the puck after it was dropped. With no one around Rilei took his time to flip the puck over Generals goalie Cullen DeYoung’s shoulder.
In the third period Austin struck again making the score 3-1 with 17:11 left to play in regulation. On a 2-on-1 with his brother Isaak Brassard carried the puck to the bottom set of hash marks on the near side faceoff circle in the Gens zone. With only Bryce Cooper and DeYoung to beat Isaak slid the puck to Matys Brassard who had an open net to aim for extending the lead to 2 goals.
DeYoung (0-2) still searches for his first win of the new year as the Generals starter, while Ethan Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in his first action of the season.
Next up for the Generals is a Thursday afternoon matchup against the Minnesota Wilderness of the Midwest Division. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:45 p.m. CDT (5:45 p.m. EST) on rink 2 at the Super Rink in Blaine, Mn.
