Alex Cohen of the Northeast Generals has committed to play NCAA D1 College Hockey at Union College in the fall. Alex is an original NAHL Northeast Generals having joined the Generals in their first ever NAHL draft in 2016, being selected in the 8th round. He has been a mainstay in the Generals line-up ever since.
Cohen who played for Lovell Hockey growing up made a lasting impact in his 3 seasons with the Generals. He improved greatly each year (going from 8, 17 to 31 points) and was named Assistant Captain for the 2018-2019 season. He represented the Generals in the NAHL Top Prospects Showcase adding an assist in 2 games. His excellent play is reflected in the Generals record books where he has the following accomplishments:
1st in Games played with 157
T-1st in Short Handed Goals with 4
6th in Scoring with 29g, 27a, 56pts
4th in Goals with 29
Alex played a complete 200 foot game every night and was a top penalty killer, led the team in face-off percentage (64% career) and was incredibly hard to play against often matching up against opposing teams top lines.
Generals GM Bryan Erikson said “I can’t say enough great things about Alex. Just an honest 200 foot hockey player. Not a lot of holes in his game. He can skate, he can shoot and he can find the open man. Came to the rink everyday ready to work and it showed in how much he improved over the past 3 seasons. His ability to play in all situations will be hard to replace next year. He put himself in a great recruiting spot and we are very proud of his choosing Union College. He worked extremely hard to reach the Division 1 level and we are really proud and excited for him. He’s a special kid that I will miss.”
Added Head Coach Joe Lovell “Alex was awesome to Coach. Worked his tail off everyday, great kid in the locker room and just an outstanding teammate. Was that player that we trusted in all situations from key face-offs to penalty kills to shutting down other teams top scorers. And what was amazing is he was still getting better at the end of the year. Union is getting a great person and player. Alex has been a Lovell Hockey mainstay for a long time and I am so glad that all his hard work has paid off. Excited to follow Alex’s career.”
Union plays in the prestigious ECAC (East Coast Athletic Conference) conference and finished the 2018-19 season 20-13-6. Their schedule is loaded, playing top teams such as Harvard, Cornell, Quinnipiac, Clarkson and non-conference games vs. BU, Northeastern and UMASS to name a few.
Alex becomes the 12th General from this past season to commit to play Division 1 College hockey and the 22nd overall to make an NCAA Commitment helping the NAHL to another record breaking commitment total.
